David Moyes has expressed confidence that Jack Grealish's determination to revive his career can bring excitement back to Everton. The Manchester City outcast, who started only seven Premier League games last season, is in contention to feature in Everton's opener at Leeds on Monday, according to the Everton manager.
Moyes said Grealish is 'looking fabulous, in great shape' despite not playing in pre-season after falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola. The 29-year-old was left out of City's Club World Cup squad and omitted from England's European Championship squad last summer.
The Everton boss revealed he gathered extensive information on Grealish's struggles at City but did not speak to Guardiola. Moyes cited the player's hunger to prove himself as key to the loan deal. 'The knowledge that he thinks he's got a little bit to prove and to stand up,' Moyes said. 'I just sense Jack is carrying that with him now. I hope it shows through this season.'
Grealish is Everton's sixth summer signing, with goalkeeper Tom King following. However, Moyes admitted the squad remains light in several areas after missing various transfer targets. He believes the club's recent relegation battles and lack of European football have deterred some players.
Moyes emphasised the need to rebuild Everton's reputation alongside the new stadium. 'There's been quite a few players who I've been disappointed have not chosen to come to Everton this summer,' he said. 'Hopefully they are beginning to see a new stadium, great results in the second half of last season, and they start to believe Everton is a good home for them.'
