England recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory over Andorra in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, with Elliot Anderson named man of the match on his senior debut. The result was never in doubt, as the home side dominated possession and created numerous chances against a defence that rarely threatened.
The opening goal came from an own goal after a cross from Noni Madueke, who was England’s brightest attacker. Declan Rice doubled the lead with a header from a Reece James delivery, with the latter appearing to have established himself as the first-choice right-back under Thomas Tuchel.
Anderson, 22, operated in the holding midfield role and showed positive passing, awareness and pressing, although the opposition offered little resistance. Eberechi Eze wasted some inviting chances, while Marcus Rashford struggled to make an impact, missing a sitter and seeing his tricks and flicks fail to come off.
Harry Kane was constantly surrounded by three centre-backs and dropped deep to influence play, but had no clear sights of goal. Jordan Pickford faced no shots, while Marc Guéhi and Dan Burn were untroubled at the back, with Burn looking increasingly like the manager’s leading centre-back.
Substitutes Anthony Gordon, Morgan Rogers, Tino Livramento, Ezri Konsa and Morgan Gibbs-White each were given ratings of six, but none managed to change the course of a match that England controlled throughout.
