Emma Raducanu is poised to make her competitive comeback from illness at the Internationaux de Strasbourg next week. The 23-year-old British number one has been sidelined since March after contracting a post-viral illness that forced her to withdraw from four consecutive tournaments.
Layoff and Recovery
Raducanu first fell unwell in February and has not played since Indian Wells. She travelled to Rome to practise ahead of the Italian Open but ultimately decided she was not ready to return. Speaking to reporters in Rome, she described the lingering effects: "Post-viral, it's quite hard. You feel drained, you feel tired, no energy. It's difficult, and it lingered for quite a while."
Despite the setback, Raducanu expressed optimism about her recovery: "I think I've really turned a corner and I feel so much better. I feel great on the court."
Strasbourg Wild Card
Raducanu has accepted a wild card into the Strasbourg tournament, which offers valuable clay-court preparation ahead of the French Open starting on May 24. The tournament announced her participation on X, stating: "Welcome back, Emma! The 2021 US Open champion will be back on the clay courts in Strasbourg."
This marks a repeat of her appearance 12 months ago, when she reached the second round. The 2026 season has been challenging for Raducanu, who also dealt with a foot problem earlier in the year and remains without a coach after splitting with Francisco Roig following the Australian Open.
Ranking Impact
Raducanu's extended absence has caused her to slide down the WTA rankings, meaning she will not be seeded at Roland Garros. Nevertheless, she is focused on regaining match fitness and confidence in Strasbourg before heading to Paris.
