Owen Elding was sensational in Hibs' 2-1 first-leg victory over Shkendija, and the Irish youngster is capable of causing problems for a 'ropey-looking' Rangers side in Glasgow, according to Tam McManus.
Elding's Breakout Performance
The former Hibs striker highlighted Elding's display as the biggest talking point of Thursday's win, even more than Warren O'Hara's dramatic late winner. Elding's goal was richly deserved, with his movement, workrate, and confidence causing constant problems for the North Macedonian defence.
McManus noted that Elding played with the swagger of someone who believes he belongs at this level, and that's exactly what Hibs supporters want to see. Despite some raised eyebrows when Hibs paid a reputed £400,000 to Sligo Rovers, feedback from figures like Stephen Kenny suggested the kid was a snip, and that has proved correct so far.
More Than Just Goals
While strikers are judged on goals, Elding offers much more. He pressed relentlessly, linked play intelligently, and gave Hibs an outlet whenever needed. His energy lifted teammates and the Easter Road crowd, making him the type of player that gets fans off their seats.
Gray deserves credit for showing faith in the youngster, and that belief is being repaid. Managers often talk about giving young players opportunities, but they only stay in the team if they produce, and Elding is doing exactly that.
Job Not Finished
The trip to North Macedonia will be difficult, and Hibs need another disciplined performance to progress. Shkendija were a step up from Malisheva, and there were defensive moments that will concern Gray, but taking a one-goal lead away from home is far better than travelling level or behind.
European progression would build confidence, bring prize money, and keep the feel-good factor growing at Easter Road. It would also quieten some noise around Gray from a disgruntled support.
Rangers Test Ahead
Before that, Hibs face a big game at Ibrox against a slow-starting Rangers. Hibs ended a hoodoo by winning there in May, and they'll need another big performance to repeat the trick. Having watched Rangers' first two games, McManus believes they are a team in transition under Derek McInnes and are there for the taking early in the season.
Hibs have shown in flashes they can be dangerous, but it will take a complete 90-plus minute performance to come away with three points and pile misery on Rangers. With Elding in this form, anything is possible.
