England take on Croatia this evening in the penultimate fixture of their four-game international break. The Three Lions have embarked on their Nations League chapter following World Cup heartbreak in the summer, thanks to Argentina’s last-gasp winner in the semi-finals in Arlington, Texas.
Tuchel’s early results and the road ahead
Thomas Tuchel has since overseen a defeat by world champions Spain and a win over the Czech Republic in the first two games of this three-week window, and there is another clash with the Czechs to come to round off the first internationals of the new season.
This fixture will be a little different, however, with the match, set to take place at the Stadion HNK in Rijeka, to happen behind closed doors.
Why the match is behind closed doors
That is because the Croatians were handed a stadium ban by UEFA, penalising them for crowd disturbances and discriminatory fan behavior during a match against France in March last year.
Slaven Bilic’s side reached the first knockout round of the World Cup, before they were beaten by Portugal 2-1 in Toronto, Canada, as Goncalo Ramos’ stoppage-time winner completed a superb fightback from a goal down.
