Cristian Romero, the Tottenham Hotspur captain, has followed the lead of his Argentina international colleague Enzo Fernandez by expressing uncertainty over his club future, despite recently signing a new contract and publicly affirming his "respect and affection" for Spurs.
Romero's Ambiguous Stance After Champions League Victory
The central defender was directly questioned about his plans following Tottenham's dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening. When pressed to provide assurances that he would remain with the North London club beyond the upcoming summer transfer window, Romero offered a notably non-committal response.
"The truth is that I'm focused on the situation we're in," Romero stated. "I have a lot of respect and affection for the club and I want to finish the season in the best way possible. We'll see later but the most important thing now is to recover energy."
Contract Situation and Atletico Madrid Interest
This public hesitation comes despite the 27-year-old having signed a fresh four-year contract with Tottenham just last August, following the club's Europa League triumph. He was subsequently appointed captain after the departure of Son Heung-min. However, interest from other European giants persists.
Atletico Madrid were actively pursuing Romero during the previous summer transfer window but ultimately failed to finance a deal for the defender. Their manager, Diego Simeone, openly praised the player during a press conference ahead of the Champions League clash.
"I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan," Simeone said. "I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball. As a fan of Argentina, I have seen him play more games for the national team than I have for Spurs, but I'm a big fan of him, for sure."
Parallels with Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez
Romero's comments mirror those made by his compatriot and Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who hinted he would evaluate his options at Stamford Bridge at the season's conclusion. This followed Chelsea's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, which resulted in an 8-2 aggregate loss.
The £107 million midfielder told ESPN Argentina: "I don't know, there are eight games left and the FA Cup. There's the World Cup and then we'll see." Fernandez, whose current contract runs until 2032, is reportedly attracting significant interest from PSG, Real Madrid, and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
Chelsea's Response and Managerial Focus
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior declined to engage with speculation regarding Fernandez's future in the immediate aftermath of their European exit. Instead, he emphasized the immediate priorities facing his squad.
"Firstly, I haven't seen that so it's hard for me to speak on speculation after a game," Rosenior said. "I need to focus right now on the most important things, which is making sure we get a result against Everton on Saturday."
Fernandez's future is further complicated by a recent change in representation, having parted ways with agent Uriel Perez to join The Elegant Game, an agency co-founded by former PSG forward Javier Pastore.
World Cup Commitments and Season Finale
Both Romero and Fernandez are expected to feature prominently for Argentina as they defend their World Cup title in North America later this year, under the management of Lionel Scaloni. This international duty adds another layer to their club future considerations.
For now, Romero maintains that his primary focus is on concluding Tottenham's season strongly, despite the swirling transfer rumors and public admiration from managers like Diego Simeone. His ambiguous comments, however, leave the door open for potential summer movement, creating uncertainty around one of Tottenham's key defensive pillars and their captain.
