Emma Hayes has backed England to triumph in Sunday's Euro 2024 final against Spain, citing the Lionesses' resilience and depth as key factors. Writing for The Guardian, the former Chelsea manager argued that an England victory would be an even bigger achievement than their Euro 2022 win, given the strength of the opposition.
Hayes noted that England have been 'lucky rather than good' in the knockout stages, but praised their ability to find ways to win. 'Their resilience is their superpower,' she wrote, highlighting the impact of substitutes like Michelle Agyemang, who has scored three goals in four caps. However, she expects Sarina Wiegman to stick with Alessia Russo as the starting centre-forward.
Spain, the world champions, have controlled possession throughout the tournament but have shown vulnerabilities at the back. Hayes pointed to chances created by Germany, Belgium and Italy as evidence that Spain can be breached. 'The opportunity to score against them is greater,' she said, noting that Spain's high defensive line leaves space behind their centre-backs.
Hayes also analysed Spain's tactical setup, observing that Aitana Bonmatí has been playing wider than usual due to Alexia Putellas occupying the number 10 role. She praised Spain's set-piece efficiency and counter-pressing, calling their defensive effort 'exceptional'. However, she believes England's experience as holders and their belief in coming from behind could prove decisive.
'England should be the favourites purely because they are the holders and have had the experience of winning it,' Hayes concluded. 'Sometimes it pays to be lucky rather than good, but we shouldn't dismiss that or talk it down.'
