Chelsea Takes Disciplinary Action Against Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea Football Club has made the significant decision to drop midfielder Enzo Fernandez for their next two fixtures following controversial remarks made by the player during the international break. The comments have raised serious questions about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
Sanction Imposed After Podcast Remarks
The 25-year-old Argentine international, who joined Chelsea for a then-British record fee of £107 million in 2023, will miss Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and next weekend's crucial Premier League encounter with Manchester City. This disciplinary action comes after Fernandez told a podcast that he would like to live in Madrid, fueling existing speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid.
Head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed the club's position, stating: "I spoke with Enzo about an hour ago. As a football club, with me as part of the decision, he won't be available for tomorrow's game or Manchester City next Sunday."
Rosenior expressed his disappointment with Fernandez's public statements, particularly following Chelsea's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in March, during which the midfielder had already cast uncertainty about his future at the club.
A Clear Breach of Club Culture
The Chelsea manager emphasized that while he respects Fernandez as both a player and person, the comments represented a clear violation of the club's cultural standards. "It's disappointing for Enzo to speak that way," Rosenior said. "I have got no bad words to say about him, but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build."
Fernandez, who was appointed vice-captain in 2024 after overcoming a difficult initial period at the club, has developed into one of Chelsea's most influential figures both on and off the pitch. His potential departure would represent a substantial setback for owners BlueCo and their ambitions to transform Chelsea into genuine Premier League title contenders.
The Door Remains Open for Fernandez
Despite the disciplinary action, Rosenior made it clear that this does not necessarily signal the end of Fernandez's Chelsea career. "Enzo, firstly, as a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect," the manager stated. "He's frustrated because he wants us to be successful."
Rosenior explained that the decision was made collectively by the club's leadership, including ownership, sporting directors, and coaching staff. "In terms of the decision, it's not all about me, or the sporting directors, the ownership, the players, we are aligned in our decision. The door is not closed on Enzo. It's a sanction. You have to protect the culture and, in terms of that, a line was crossed."
Cucurella Escapes Disciplinary Action
In related developments, Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella will face no disciplinary measures despite giving a frank interview to The Athletic in which he discussed "instability" at the club following the dismissal of former manager Enzo Maresca in January.
The Spanish international, who joined Chelsea in 2022, also appeared to question the club's recruitment policy, which has focused heavily on signing young players with an eye toward future development rather than immediate success.
Rosenior revealed he had a productive thirty-minute conversation with Cucurella in his office, during which he expressed his disappointment that the defender had chosen to voice his concerns publicly rather than internally. "My disappointment in Marc's interview was where it went to," Rosenior explained. "I think he should've spoken to us first about how he was feeling."
The Chelsea manager emphasized his desire for open communication within the club while acknowledging areas needing improvement. "I want players to know they can speak openly and honestly for the benefit of the football club. As a football club, we know we need to improve."
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges Chelsea faces as they attempt to rebuild both their squad and club culture following significant investment and managerial changes in recent seasons.
