Jamie Carragher has admitted he is 'a bit worried' about Liverpool's new approach to the transfer window. The Reds have had a relatively quiet summer, but things are beginning to ramp up amid their pursuit of top target Bradley Barcola.
Barcola pursuit raises concerns
Liverpool are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over the possibility of signing Barcola, who the French giants value at £145million. However, Carragher isn't convinced that he's the right move.
After pointing out last month that the 23-year-old wouldn't be a like-for-like replacement for the recently departed Mo Salah, the Liverpool legend now says that his former club's pursuit of Barcola represents a change of strategy at Anfield. Voicing his concerns, Carragher used Manchester United's past troubles to warn Liverpool where they could be about to go wrong.
Carragher's warning
"The thing that I've probably liked about United this summer is it feels like for years they're always obsessed with this big name, and I worry about a little bit with my own club with that," he told the Football Ramble podcast. "What we did last summer - and I said this, and I didn't really like it - it felt like a Real Madrid summer.
"[Florian] Wirtz, [Alexander] Isak, we're gonna get [Hugo] Ekitike, another striker for £80m even though we've got one for £125m. This summer it's all about Barcola.
"I'm like, 'what about the days we had before when we were building that team under [Jurgen] Klopp, and we were getting players who people weren't quite sure about, and getting great value? I almost wanna go back to that."
United's approach praised
Carragher went on add: "What I would say about United, it doesn't feel like this summer they're on this mission to get this big name... Andrey Santos, who knows how he'll do? [Youri] Tielemans. Sort of what you might think, 'clever, people not expecting that, something a little bit different'.
"It's not about the name, it's about what's right for the team and the club. And it feels like United are going down that road which I think is probably healthy."
