Prime Minister Andy Burnham has admitted he is "leaning Hibs" despite an initial preference for Celtic, following a campaign by his son to switch his Scottish football allegiance.
Burnham, a lifelong Everton supporter, was overheard speaking to Labour staffers Brian Roy and Michael Marra during a visit to Glasgow on Friday, where he was chairing the First National Economic Council for Nations before meeting First Minister John Swinney.
Son's wedding influences allegiance
The Prime Minister revealed that his son, who is marrying into a Hibs family, attended last Sunday's Premiership clash between Hibs and Celtic at Easter Road and is now trying to persuade him to follow the Edinburgh side.
"My son is marrying into a Hibs family so he was up for Hibs-Celtic last week," Mr Burnham said. "He was at Easter Road last week, so he's up and down a lot now. He's trying to get me on this. I'm more Celtic. He's got me leaning Hibs a bit."
Everton roots and Scottish heritage
Burnham is famously a devoted Everton supporter, having backed the club since childhood. His mother was born and raised in Scotland, and his great-grandfather emigrated to Liverpool from Drogheda in Ireland.
The Prime Minister's comments suggest the family influence could yet shift his Scottish football loyalties ahead of his son's upcoming wedding.
