Bruno Guimaraes has revealed that Declan Rice was among the first Arsenal players to welcome him after his move to the Premier League champions was completed. The former Newcastle United captain has joined for a fee of £75 million, signing a contract until 2030 with an option for a further year.
Midfield reinforcements
Mikel Arteta's midfield already featured Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, but Guimaraes adds industry, a combative edge, and creativity in the final third. The Brazil international has had several flashpoints with Arsenal in recent seasons, including altercations with Jorginho and Rice, but those are now in the past.
Speaking to Arsenal's official website, Guimaraes said: 'Rice sent me a message: “Come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends”. I was happy he messaged me, but the midfield we have here, in my point of view, is one of the best in Europe.'
Brazilian connections
Guimaraes also revealed that his international teammate Gabriel Magalhaes had been pushing for him to make the switch. 'Big Gabi was very excited. Every time he sent me the message, “We’ll wait for you, when will you come?”' he said. 'I’m so excited to join them, not only the Brazilians, we have an amazing squad here.'
Sporting director Andrea Berta highlighted Guimaraes' versatility and leadership, saying the signing will help Arteta evolve the team's playing style, which was criticised last season for relying too heavily on defensive strengths. 'Bruno is a player with a great mentality and great quality, who will bring strong leadership to our squad,' Berta said. 'He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year.'
