Bruno Fernandes Condemns VAR Decisions in Man Utd's Draw with Bournemouth
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has launched a scathing critique of VAR officials following a contentious 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Friday night. The match was marred by two pivotal penalty decisions that left United players and management fuming over perceived inconsistencies.
Controversial Penalty Incidents Spark Fury
The drama unfolded in a frantic second half at the Vitality Stadium. United initially took the lead through a Matheus Cunha penalty after Alex Jimenez was adjudged to have pulled him back. However, controversy erupted when referee Stuart Attwell waved away appeals for a second United penalty after Amad went down under pressure from Bourrien Truffert.
VAR reviewed the Amad incident but concluded the contact was "not sufficient for a foul". To compound United's frustration, Bournemouth immediately equalised through Ryan Christie. Later, Harry Maguire was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity by fouling Evanilson, with Junior Kroupi converting the resulting penalty to make it 2-2.
Fernandes Questions Refereeing Consistency
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Fernandes expressed his bewilderment at the officiating. "Disappointed because we did enough to get three points," he stated. "Not getting a penalty and then we get a penalty against where it's the same situation as Amad - one is one, one is not. I don't understand why VAR doesn't get involved."
Fernandes argued that both incidents involved similar two-hand grabs, making the disparity in decisions inexplicable. He emphasised that Amad was pushed off balance while preparing to shoot, criticising the notion that smaller players are often deemed "soft" compared to their larger counterparts.
Carrick and Pundits Weigh In on the Debate
United manager Michael Carrick was uncharacteristically angry in his post-match interview, labelling the decisions as "crazy" and "baffling". He insisted that if one penalty was awarded, the other should have been given as well, citing identical circumstances.
Pundits offered mixed perspectives on the incidents. Jamie Redknapp suggested the Amad appeal would have been "really harsh", while former United striker Andy Cole questioned the difference between the two situations, noting Evanilson "went down easily".
Match Highlights and Broader Implications
The draw leaves United reflecting on missed opportunities, having twice surrendered leads. The match also highlighted ongoing debates about VAR's role in ensuring fairness, with Fernandes calling for greater consistency in decision-making to protect the integrity of the game.
