Nearly one in three British football fans are planning to pull a sickie or make an excuse on Thursday morning to watch England's second Euro 2024 match against Denmark, according to a new poll. The survey of 2,000 Brits, commissioned by Amazon Fire TV, found that 30 per cent intend to skip work ahead of the 5pm kick-off.
London leads the trend with 51 per cent of fans planning to dodge work, followed by Leicester (41 per cent), Nottingham (32 per cent), Manchester (31 per cent) and Cambridge (31 per cent). Even Scottish and Welsh supporters are joining in, with 30 per cent in Cardiff and 29 per cent in Glasgow planning to stay home.
Gen Zers and Millennials are the most likely to call in sick, with 46 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. Over two-thirds (69 per cent) of fans will watch from home, while a third (32 per cent) plan to gather with friends and family. Four in ten (39 per cent) will follow the action on social media.
Despite high hopes, only 39 per cent think England will reach the final, and just 23 per cent believe they will win the tournament. Young Brits are most confident, with 35 per cent of 18-29 year olds predicting victory. Gareth Southgate was voted the greatest England manager ever by 37 per cent of respondents, ahead of Sir Alf Ramsey (29 per cent) and Sir Bobby Robson (18 per cent).
