Bolton Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw by Preston North End in the first round of the League Cup, forcing the tie to a penalty shootout. Elsewhere, Middlesbrough secured a 2-0 victory over Lincoln City, and Bristol City triumphed 3-1 against Millwall.
Bolton vs Preston
At the University of Bolton Stadium, the hosts took an early lead through a goal from Dion Charles in the 12th minute. Preston equalised in the 67th minute when Emil Riis Jakobsen found the net, sending the match to penalties.
The shootout saw Bolton convert all five of their spot-kicks, while Preston missed one, allowing Bolton to progress to the second round.
Middlesbrough and Bristol City advance
Middlesbrough dominated their match against Lincoln City, with goals from Riley McGree and Chuba Akpom securing a comfortable 2-0 win. Bristol City also advanced with a 3-1 victory over Millwall, with goals from Nahki Wells, Andreas Weimann, and Alex Scott.
The results mean all three teams progress to the second round of the competition, joining other winners from the first round.
