Arsenal take on Coventry City in the opening match of the new Premier League season tonight. The Gunners begin their title defence against the Championship kings, who are managed by former Chelsea midfielder (and boss) Frank Lampard.
Team news and injuries
Mikel Arteta’s men have strengthened in the transfer window, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis coming in, but they were dealt a blow at the World Cup as William Saliba’s back problem - that he had been playing through towards the end of last term - flared up badly, and it will keep the central defender out for weeks. The north Londoners have also got Jurrien Timber out injured, with the Dutchman struggling with a groin problem that has persisted from the previous campaign.
Coventry’s ambitions
Coventry, meanwhile, will be out for an immediate scalp, with the likes of Milan van Ewijk, Gustavo Hamer and Ephron Mason-Clark eager to make an impressive in the top flight. The Sky Blues have been handed perhaps their toughest test off the bat, while there will be a reunion for Viktor Gyokeres, who rose to prominence at the Coventry Building Society Arena before earning himself a big-money move to Sporting Lisbon.
