Carlos Alcaraz has been ruled out of Wimbledon as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury that will sideline him for at least three months. The 23-year-old Spaniard has not competed since withdrawing from the Barcelona Open last month after feeling pain in his right wrist.
Alcaraz had already missed the clay-court season, including the French Open, which begins on Sunday. In a statement on social media, he said: 'My recovery is going well and I’m feeling much better, but unfortunately I’m still not ready to compete, which is why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen’s and Wimbledon.'
Alcaraz is the reigning champion at Roland Garros, where he defeated Jannik Sinner in last year's final. A two-time Wimbledon champion, he reached the final there last year, losing to Sinner in four sets. The decision to withdraw is no surprise given the constant strain tennis places on wrists and the risk of chronic injuries.
In Alcaraz's absence, world No 1 Jannik Sinner remains the dominant force, having won his sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title at the Italian Open and 29 matches in a row. Sinner is the favourite for both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, which begins on 29 June.
