Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has expressed anger after appearing to confirm that the kick-off time for the World Cup round of 16 match against England has been changed due to the threat of severe weather. The match, originally scheduled for 6pm local time (1am BST) on Sunday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, is now expected to begin at 12 noon local time (7pm BST).
Aguirre Voices Frustration
Speaking to Spanish-Mexican journalist Joaquin Lopez Doriga on Radio Formula, Aguirre said: “That’s right, it’s like a kick in the gut, it changes everything, the plan. It’s not that it’s completely ruined, but almost, because you have to swallow six hours of scheduled training.” He added that the change affects meal timing, naps, sleep, and physiotherapy, describing it as a significant disruption despite appearing trivial.
Aguirre emphasized that 60 staff members are working to prepare the 26 players for the match, and the late adjustment undermines their efforts. “They didn't consult me and yes, I'm quite angry,” he stated.
No Advantage for Mexico
When asked if the change gives hosts Mexico an advantage at the Azteca, Aguirre dismissed the idea: “Not at all, zero, name, no advantage whatsoever.” He noted that the team had planned around the original schedule since discussions in Ecuador, and the change disadvantages them.
FIFA remain in talks to finalize the move, with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall forecast for the original time. The match is a crucial round of 16 clash, and the late change has caused frustration for both teams.
