Arsenal had two major reservations about Mikel Merino before completing his £27.4 million transfer from Real Sociedad in the summer, according to reports. The 28-year-old Spanish midfielder signed a four-year contract, but the club harboured doubts over his age and the likelihood of recouping a future return on investment.
Despite these concerns, manager Mikel Arteta pushed for Merino's arrival, viewing him as a player who could combine attacking threat with duel-winning ability. Merino was seen as an upgrade on Kai Havertz and Declan Rice for the left side of Arsenal's midfield three.
Merino's start at the Emirates was disrupted by a shoulder injury, but he now feels he is settling in. “Everything is beginning to click,” he said last week. “I'm starting to understand everything perfectly. I know the rhythms in the team.”
During negotiations for Merino, Arsenal reignited their interest in his Real Sociedad and Spain teammate Martin Zubimendi. The 25-year-old holding midfielder, who has a £51 million release clause, is now expected to join the Gunners in the summer, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey set to see their contracts expire.
Arsenal were unable to force a deal in January due to Profit and Sustainability Rules, meaning Real Sociedad will have a decisive role in agreeing payment terms. Zubimendi was close to joining Liverpool in the summer before changing his mind, but Arsenal now appear to have won the race for his signature.
