Cavan Sullivan became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the US national team as the incoming Manchester City signing continues his hot streak. The 17-year-old netted just five days after his birthday in a 3-0 win over Mexico to break the record.
"These are the moments you dream of when you're a three, four, five or six-year-old," Sullivan said after the game. "I manifested this moment. Not just these past couple of hours when I found out I was starting, but my whole life."
Record-breaking rise
Sullivan is due to join City after he turns 18, having signed an agreement back in 2024 when he joined hometown club Philadelphia Union. He broke Freddie Adu's record when he became the youngest MLS debutant aged 14, and strong form in recent months - since the summer break only Lionel Messi can match his 13 goal involvements in the league - earned a call-up to the national team.
That has already proved fruitful, with two appearances to his name for Mauricio Pochettino's side and a goal that brings another record with it. City have been monitoring Sullivan closely for years and are delighted by his development.
Transfer plans unchanged
The immediate future of City's position has been thrown into doubt after an independent panel found them guilty of serious Premier League rule breaches that could see them handicapped in the Premier League or even, in the worst case, kicked out of the competition.
When news broke, a quote emerged from one of Sullivan's representatives casting doubt on his move. However, that was debunked as fake with no current change in plans and Sullivan still expected to join City.
Before then, there are opportunities in both MLS and on the international stage for the 17-year-old to continue his rise in world football.
