Shearer warns Jaissle of fan anger after Coventry defeat

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has warned head coach Matthias Jaissle that he will face the anger of the club's supporters unless there is a massive improvement in performance against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Magpies were thrashed 4-1 by newly promoted Coventry City on Monday evening, losing by the same scoreline away from home for the second game in succession. The manner of their defeat at the CBS Arena has raised questions about Jaissle's system, but the Magpies boss used his pre-match press conference to insist it was individual errors rather than systemic ones that cost his side against Frank Lampard's men.

Shearer's warning

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "Newcastle were really poor on Monday evening against Coventry. There was a chance just before half time where Fernandez-Pardo had one blocked on the line. It might've been different. It wasn't. It just wasn't pretty."

"As much as it hurts me, I guess when you're getting battered 4-1, and you get battered four at Leeds, I did expect it this season. I've said it before, I do expect it to be a yo-yo season, but you can't have too many of them after the Leeds game and that's two now, both on a Monday night, so let's hope we can avoid playing on a Monday night."

Villa test

Shearer added: "I will be at St James' Park on Saturday. Aston Villa had a great result in the Champions League, scoring six so that's going to be a really, really tough game. They have got to bounce back. You need a game straight away and they've got it on Saturday. It's not acceptable at any home or away game to lose how they have done, but they won't get away with that at home with 52,000 fans there."

"Depending on what happens with the result, you'll find out what Newcastle is and can be if they don't get the right result or if they get a similar result on Saturday. Matthias Jaissle will feel the anger of the fans unless they see a massive improvement because that's not acceptable going away twice and conceding four goals."

"Jaissle needs a result massively. You can overreact sometimes because if Newcastle had gone to Coventry and won, they'd have been fourth. I think Newcastle are where I thought they'd be at this stage of the season, so there's no panic."
