Newcastle stars reveal true feelings on Isak ahead of return

Alexander Isak is set to make his first return to St James' Park on Sunday as Liverpool face Newcastle United in their opening fixture of the season. The Swedish striker's move to the Reds last summer was controversial, with the Magpies initially refusing to sell before Isak went on strike and accused the club of breaking promises in a statement.

Newcastle eventually relented, selling Isak for a British record fee of £130million. The forward missed both fixtures against his former club last season, but will now finally go up against them in front of the home fans.

What Newcastle players have said about Isak

While Isak can expect a hostile reception from the St James' Park crowd, his former team-mates have indicated they hold no grudges. Defender Dan Burn revealed how Isak said goodbye to the squad after the transfer was completed.

Burn said: "He put a message in the [WhatsApp] chat just saying that he was leaving, and thanks for the memories, all that sort of stuff, and the lads replied. It was all positive. I think Alex is getting what he wants, and now we've just got to focus and do what we can with the players that we've got."

Burn and Botman praise Isak

Burn acknowledged the frustration of Newcastle supporters but defended his former team-mate. He added: "It's only natural. Alex is probably one of the best three strikers in the world at the moment. As a Newcastle fan personally, obviously, you'd love him to want to stay. But I know that's football, and there are players who've come and gone from Newcastle before. Alex is my mate at the end of the day, so it was a tough situation, but I'm glad that we're getting a good return on a player that we've had, and he's getting the move that he wanted."

Sven Botman also posted a message of support on social media, writing: "What started off as teammates growed [sic] in one of my rare best friendships. No more words needed brother, all the best in your next chapter."

Gordon sends message of respect

Anthony Gordon, who has since moved to Barcelona, shared a similar sentiment. He said: "Regardless of the situation and what's gone on, it's been a pleasure to play with you. One of the best chemistries I've had on the pitch and more importantly a great person and teammate. I wish you nothing but the best brother."

Despite the warm words, any friendliness will be set aside at 4.30pm on Sunday as Newcastle look to start their new era with a win against Isak and his Liverpool team-mates.
