Roy Keane has been named the hardest player in Manchester United's history, according to a new ranking by Mirror Football. The list of 50 fiercest players to have represented the club spans from the Busby Babes era to the present day, with Keane topping the chart ahead of Nobby Stiles, Bryan Robson, and Jaap Stam.
Top Five Hardest United Players
Keane, who captained United to numerous trophies, is described as "the golden standard among football's hard men who possess genuine talent with the ball." The Cork-born midfielder brought "a rare blend of ferocity and technical ability" to his role, making him a natural leader over a highly decorated career.
In second place is Nobby Stiles, the 5'6" midfield anchor who "revelled in the muckier sides of the game." Stiles is remembered for an iconic image of him holding the 1966 World Cup trophy with his false teeth in the other hand. Third is Bryan Robson, the club's longest-serving captain, who set standards in leadership across 461 appearances.
Jaap Stam, who spent just three years at United, is fourth. The Treble-winning centre-back's reputation was such that Sir Alex Ferguson has "repeatedly described selling Stam to Lazio in 2001 as one of the biggest regrets of his career." Frank Barson, who once incurred a seven-month ban for a tackle and required police escorts, rounds out the top five.
From Busby Babes to Modern Era
The list includes several players from the Busby Babes era, including Duncan Edwards, who died in the Munich Air Disaster at age 21. Despite only five years in the team, Edwards established himself as one of the toughest characters in English football. Fellow Munich survivor Bill Foulkes, who worked as a miner while playing, is also featured.
More recent players include Wayne Rooney, who is ranked 20th, and Phil Bardsley, who is placed 19th after being the only player with documented footage of knocking out another member of the list. Eric Cantona, famous for his kung fu kick, is 18th, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a black belt in taekwondo, is 17th.
Notable Entries and Omissions
Current players feature on the list, with Casemiro at 21st and Lisandro Martinez, nicknamed 'The Butcher', at 29th. The list also includes George Best, Paul Scholes, and Denis Law, as well as less conventional picks like Denis Irwin, who was sent off just once in 641 games.
The ranking notes that some players, like Tony Coton, never made a first-team appearance for United but are included for their fearless reputation. The list concludes with Keane at number one, described as "arguably the hardest player ever to feature in the Premier League."
