Alexander Isak has thanked Liverpool supporters after facing a hostile reception on his first return to Newcastle United. The Swedish international was jeered throughout Sunday's match at St James' Park, his first appearance back at the ground since his British record £125million move to Liverpool last September.
Hostile reception from home fans
Isak was met with jeers as he stepped off the team coach to enter the ground, with his every touch booed during the match alongside a string of X-rated chants from the Toon Army. The home supporters also directed their displeasure at the striker as he departed the pitch at full time and when he boarded the team coach for the journey back to Merseyside.
In stark contrast, Isak received a warm reception from the travelling Liverpool supporters after the final whistle, having completed the full 90 minutes for the first time in his Liverpool career.
Isak's message to supporters
Taking to social media, the 26-year-old wrote: "Season kicked off. Thank you for the immense support Reds. We go on to the next #ynwa".
Liverpool resume their Premier League campaign on Saturday with Nottingham Forest visiting in new head coach Andoni Iraola's first competitive home fixture in charge (12.30pm kick-off).
