Gyokeres 'sour' despite breaking Nations League scoring record

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres expressed disappointment despite setting a new Nations League goalscoring record as Sweden drew 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday. The 28-year-old opened the scoring in Zenica, but Kerim Alajbegovic equalised late on, leaving Graham Potter's side top of Group B4.

Record-breaking run

Gyokeres has now scored in six consecutive Nations League matches, a run dating back to October 2024, making him the first player in history to achieve this feat. His goal against Bosnia followed a strike against Poland earlier in the week, which had seen him equal the previous record shared by Manchester United's Benjamin Sesko and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Despite the personal milestone, Gyokeres was unhappy with the result, especially after having another goal disallowed by VAR for handball. 'It's sour,' he said. 'I felt it, but it's tough when there was nothing that helped a lot – whether the ball touched my hand a little or not. Of course it's tough, that would have been a nice goal.'

Mixed emotions

The striker, who has 24 goals in 40 international caps, added: 'Of course, it's hard for us not to win the game and keep a clean sheet. Playing out the game simply. But in terms of play, I think we are doing very well today and we should be happy with that. But it's heavy and we should have won.'

Gyokeres's international form contrasts with his limited appearances for Arsenal, having played just 29 minutes of Premier League football this season. He will have the chance to extend his record to seven consecutive matches when Sweden face Romania on Monday.

Return to club action

After the Romania match, Gyokeres will return to the Emirates, where Arsenal are set to host Leeds United next Saturday. The No.14 is in line for a rare start, with Kai Havertz likely to miss the game after picking up an injury while playing for Germany last week.
