England captain Ben Stokes has lauded Ollie Pope's sensational 148-run knock as "one of the best innings" he has ever witnessed, as England mounted a remarkable fightback against India in the first Test in Hyderabad.
Pope's masterful display on Day 3 turned the tide for England, who had been bowled out for just 246 in their first innings. His counter-attacking century, laced with 17 boundaries, helped England set India a challenging target of 231.
Pope's Heroics Revive England
Resuming the day at 316/6, Pope continued his aggressive approach, frustrating the Indian bowlers with his innovative strokeplay. His partnership with debutant Tom Hartley (34) added crucial runs, pushing England to a competitive total.
"For someone to come out in those conditions and play like that was incredible," Stokes said. "It's one of the best innings I've seen in an England shirt."
India's Chase Stumbles
India, chasing 231, found themselves in early trouble as England's spinners struck. At stumps on Day 3, the hosts were 119/4, still needing 112 runs with six wickets in hand.
Stokes credited England's aggressive mindset under coach Brendon McCullum for their resurgence. "We knew we had to take the game to India, and Ollie did that brilliantly," he added.
Test Hangs in the Balance
With the match finely poised, Day 4 promises a thrilling finale. Can India's middle-order steer them home, or will England's spinners complete a famous victory?
