Musharaf Asghar, the former child star who captured hearts on Channel 4's Educating Yorkshire, has transformed from a student struggling with a stammer into an accomplished motivational speaker. Now 29, he recently returned to his old school, Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, to deliver a speech that moved audiences once again.
A Viral Moment Revisited
In 2013, viewers watched Musharaf, affectionately known as 'Mushy', as he overcame his speech impediment with the help of teacher Mr Matthew Burton, who used a technique from The King's Speech. The emotional moment of Musharaf delivering a speech at the end of Year 11 went viral and remains memorable.
Thirteen years later, Musharaf returned to the school as a guest speaker for the second series of Educating Yorkshire. Reflecting on the experience on TikTok, he admitted it was one of the scariest moments of his life. 'You don't really go into school thinking you're going to deliver a talk in front of your whole class,' he said, noting the pressure of expectations.
From Student to Speaker
Musharaf has since become a professional motivational speaker, touring the UK to share his journey. He also runs a YouTube channel with over 7,000 subscribers, where he discusses various topics and connects with supporters. His openness has garnered thousands of followers online.
Fans have praised his progress, with comments such as 'You're an absolute inspiration' and 'I had tears in my eyes.' One viewer noted, 'Even after 13 years I have so much respect for you.'
Educating Yorkshire is available to watch on Channel 4.
