The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has backed head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key to lead the team's response to the 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, despite public calls for change. Chief executive Richard Gould insisted that retaining the leadership duo is the right decision, even if it is not the popular one.
Speaking at Lord's alongside Key, Gould emphasised that lessons have been learned from the winter tour and that McCullum is willing to adapt his style. The ECB's internal two-month review, which will not be published, identified areas for improvement including better use of the performance system, long-term planning, and enhanced professionalism in the senior men's set-up.
A key focus is improving communication with county clubs, with various directors of cricket invited to a meeting this week. Key acknowledged the need to lift English cricket across all departments. The review also highlighted the importance of culture and environment after incidents such as Harry Brook's disciplinary issue for a drunken altercation in New Zealand.
Gould confirmed the introduction of a midnight curfew, formalising McCullum's belief that late nights lead to problems. Test captain Ben Stokes endorsed the ECB's decision in an open letter, stating that he, McCullum, and Key have the passion to take the team forward and have learned from their mistakes.
