Former Australian cricket star David Warner has been formally charged with mid-range drink-driving following an incident in Sydney's eastern suburbs. The 39-year-old opening batsman, who represented Australia for 15 years across more than 100 Test matches, one-day internationals, and Twenty20 games, was allegedly caught during random breath testing operations.
Police Investigation Details
New South Wales Police officers reportedly observed a van stopping short of a testing site on Malabar Road in Maroubra at approximately 5:30 PM on Easter Sunday. Officers approached the vehicle and administered a breath test to the driver, who was identified as David Warner.
Alleged Blood Alcohol Reading
The test allegedly returned a reading of 0.104, which is more than twice the legal blood alcohol limit of 0.05 in New South Wales. This reading falls within the mid-range category for drink-driving offenses under Australian law.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Following the positive test result, Warner was arrested and transported to Maroubra Police Station for processing. Police have issued him with a court attendance notice requiring his appearance at the Downing Centre Local Court on May 7 to face the charges.
Warner's Cricket Career
David Warner retired from international cricket in January 2024 after a distinguished career that included 112 Test matches for Australia. He currently serves as captain of the Sydney Thunder in the domestic Big Bash League Twenty20 competition, where he continues to play professionally.
Potential Consequences
Mid-range drink-driving charges in New South Wales typically carry significant penalties including license disqualification, substantial fines, and potential imprisonment depending on the circumstances. The court will consider Warner's reading of 0.104 when determining appropriate sanctions.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing, and further details may emerge as the case progresses through the legal system. The Daily Telegraph first reported the charges against the cricket star, who has not yet made any public statement regarding the allegations.
