Australia to Reassess Molineux Captaincy Amid Mounting Injury Concerns
Australian selector Shawn Flegler has conceded that the decision to appoint Sophie Molineux as the national women's cricket team captain may require reassessment if she continues to be plagued by serious injuries. This admission comes as injury concerns mount for the allrounder, who is expected to be fit to lead the side in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the United Kingdom.
Unprecedented Captaincy Decision Under Scrutiny
Molineux's extensive injury history raised eyebrows when Cricket Australia named her as the replacement for the retiring Alyssa Healy, bypassing vice-captain Tahlia McGrath and star allrounder Ashleigh Gardner. Flegler acknowledged that it is "unprecedented" for Australia to bestow the captaincy upon a player with such uncertainty surrounding her fitness.
"It's probably a fair point to say it's unprecedented, but we think on balance, she was the candidate that was the best option for a number of reasons," Flegler stated. "Her on-field experience and success that she'd had, and her off-field connection and a vision for the team."
Injury Woes Resurface During Recent Tours
Bowling allrounder Molineux, who has played for Australia since 2018, was sidelined for over two years from 2021 due to injuries and missed the most recent Ashes series with a knee issue. Her problems resurfaced during the recent multi-format series against India, where she assumed the T20I captaincy.
During the subsequent tour of the West Indies, a back injury prevented her from bowling her spin or batting as captain in the first two matches, leading to her missing the final two games for rest. Flegler described this latest setback as "not ideal" but emphasised that a conservative approach to Molineux's fitness had always been planned ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Future Captaincy Hinges on Fitness
Flegler affirmed that he has not had second thoughts about the captaincy decision but conceded that Australia must remain open to change if more long-term injuries arise. "We're comfortable internally that it was the right decision for this group at this time," he said. "We're happy to be judged on that down the track. If it turns out that Soph is injured again long-term, we'll have to reassess where we go with the captaincy."
He added that the decision involved extensive discussions, not just among selectors, but understood that it might seem odd from an external perspective. Molineux is set to participate in upcoming training camps and is on track to be fit for the World Cup, which begins in June.
New Contracts Awarded to Rising Stars
Flegler's comments coincide with the announcement of Cricket Australia's national contract list, which features uncapped Chloe Ainsworth and teenage allrounder Lucy Hamilton for the first time. Hamilton, 19, has made her Australian debut in all three formats since early March, while Ainsworth is viewed as a longer-term prospect for the international side.
In other developments, Tayla Vlaeminck and uncapped Tess Flintoff did not have their contracts renewed. However, Vlaeminck returned to the field in a domestic "Green vs Gold" match this week after more than 500 days out with a shoulder injury, marking a positive step in her recovery.
