Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz to Team Up at US Open Mixed Doubles
Serena Williams and Alcaraz to Play US Open Mixed Doubles Together

Serena Williams will partner with Carlos Alcaraz in the mixed doubles at the US Open. Alcaraz had already confirmed he would compete at Flushing Meadows after recovering from a persistent wrist injury.

Not only will he return to singles action, but he will also play alongside Williams in what is set to be a blockbuster partnership. Alcaraz has not competed since April, but he will be fit enough to form a duo that boasts a combined 46 Grand Slam titles.

Williams' Recent Form and Singles Plans

It is currently unclear whether Williams will take a wildcard to play in the women's singles, as she did at Wimbledon. Her return to Centre Court saw her lose 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to Australian star Maya Joint, before she had to pull out of the women's doubles, where she would have played with her sister Venus Williams.

Other Notable Partnerships and Absences

Alcaraz and Williams will not be the only attention-grabbing partnership in the mixed doubles. Women's world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and 24-time Slam champion Novak Djokovic are among the other teams registered for the tournament, reports the Express.

Five of the men's top 10 will participate, with Jannik Sinner a conspicuous absentee. The Italian world No. 1 will miss the singles owing to a knee injury.

He confirmed: "Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year.

"We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue. I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart."

More Withdrawals and Confirmed Teams

Jack Draper is another notable absentee, ruled out of both the mixed doubles and singles at the US Open owing to a persistent arm injury. The British star has now been absent from all four Grand Slam events this year.

Mirra Andreeva will also team up with Andrey Rublev in what looks set to be a fascinating partnership. Peyton Stearns will also join with Christian Harrison, who was given a wildcard into the qualifying event which takes place at the Grandstand on Monday August 24th.
