Green Party Leader Zack Polanski Unveils Radical Economic Overhaul Plan

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has launched a scathing critique of the government's economic management, labelling its fiscal rules as "failing" and proposing a comprehensive overhaul of the UK's tax system to combat inflation and address what he terms "rip-off Britain". In a major policy speech, Polanski outlined a bold economic vision aimed at reshaping the nation's financial landscape.

Wealth Tax as Day One Priority

Polanski pledged to implement a wealth tax as an immediate "day one priority" if the Greens come to power. The proposed tax would levy 1% on wealth exceeding £10 billion and 2% on wealth over £1 million, with projections indicating it could raise approximately £15 billion annually. This measure, he argued, is essential for redistributing resources and funding public services.

Critique of Brexit and Call for EU Rejoin

The Green leader strongly criticised the economic impacts of Brexit, stating that the UK economy is now 6-8% smaller as a result. Polanski expressed a clear desire for the UK to rejoin the European Union, or at minimum, re-enter the Customs Union, to restore economic stability and growth. He emphasised that this move would help mitigate the negative consequences of leaving the EU.

Energy Price Controls and Tax Reforms

In response to rising energy prices following the Middle East conflict, Polanski called for government intervention to prevent further increases for UK households. He proposed strengthening the windfall tax on energy companies and equalising capital gains tax with income tax to ensure fairer taxation. These steps, he claimed, would protect consumers and generate additional revenue.

Additional Economic Proposals

Polanski's economic plan includes several other key initiatives:

  • Implementing rent controls to make housing more affordable.
  • Nationalising water companies to improve service and reduce costs.
  • Replacing current fiscal rules with "fiscal referees" to oversee government spending.
  • Re-evaluating the role of the Office for Budget Responsibility to enhance transparency.

Polanski concluded by asserting that the Greens have "torn the roof off British politics" with their ambitious economic agenda, positioning the party as a challenger to traditional fiscal policies.
