A teacher and five others have been killed in a school shooting in Thailand, according to initial reports. Officers responded urgently to a school situated north of Bangkok on Friday after receiving reports of an armed person on site.
The devastating incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, with authorities urging residents to avoid the area. "Anyone trapped inside a building, hide, close everything tightly, and wait for rescue personnel to arrive," police stated on their Facebook page.
Casualties and Response
Reports indicate that at least 20 people were wounded in addition to the six deaths. Authorities have confirmed the attacker was a student at the school. Thai police and local news sources have reported that the suspected gunman is now deceased. Local media report that he took his own life.
The suspected shooter was in ninth grade, Dechrapee Kongdee, chief of the Nonthaburi provincial police, told the BBC. In Thailand, ninth grade pupils are typically 14 years of age. Lt. Col. Dechrapee Kongdee, the Nonthaburi provincial police commander, confirmed the casualties and stated the suspected gunman had taken their own life.
Official Condolences
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul offered his condolences for those affected. He said: "This is really bad, it shouldn't have happened. I don't just feel sorry for the victims but I feel sorry that this happened. How can this happen in our country."
Witness Accounts and School Background
Images captured students evacuating the premises, fleeing from the school as police advised anyone still inside to take cover. One pupil described how he initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks. He said: "I didn't think it was a gun at first. There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again."
The Debsirin School is a well-known secondary school with multiple branches throughout the nation. The original Debsirin School in Bangkok was established by Thai King Chulalongkorn in 1885. Numerous public figures have attended the institution, including Thai prime ministers, diplomats and athletes. During the 2025 academic year, approximately 3,100 pupils were registered at the school alongside 147 teaching staff, according to district authorities.
