The cast of Two Weeks in August has revealed the significance of a hidden detail in the show's opening scene. The new series, created by Catherine Shepherd, follows a group of friends reuniting for a summer holiday in Greece, but their idyllic getaway descends into chaos after an illicit kiss.
Hidden Detail in Episode One
In the first episode, viewers meet married couple Zoe and Dan, played by Jessica Raine and Damien Molony, who are clearly struggling to move past previous events. Their financial difficulties are highlighted when friend Jess, portrayed by Antonia Thomas, suggests each person contribute €200 to a shared fund. The tension escalates when Zoe and Dan are tasked with preparing seafood for their lavish friends, forcing them to choose cheaper store-bought fish over fresh market produce.
Speaking to the Mirror, Raine and Molony pointed out a subtle but telling detail in the opening moments. Molony explained that during rehearsals with director Tom George, they explored the couple's backstory, including the fact that they likely hadn't been intimate in about a year. Improvisations included a line about packing pasta in their luggage because they couldn't afford food on the island. This detail made it into the final scene: when Zoe opens her suitcase, there is pasta visible inside. Raine added, "Three bags!"
Molony noted that such details are rare in television, where rehearsal time is limited. "It was really thrilling and informed the rest of our scenes together because this couple goes on a huge journey."
Financial Differences Among Friends
Thomas emphasized the show's realistic portrayal of financial disparities among the group. "The journey of the fish is really good, and I think it highlights the financial differences in the couples. We often see very rich people on holiday, but I love the reality. A lot of people are in that position where they can't afford €200 for the kitty and feel out of their depth."
The drama intensifies as the synopsis teases: "Set in Greece, Two Weeks in August tells the story of a woman who goes on holiday with her family and friends to rediscover joy. But what starts with an illicit kiss quickly turns the dream vacation into a nightmare. Zoe begins to act on her deepest desires, and the holiday becomes a reckoning for a group of adults who refuse to grow up. When they discover they are trapped on the island and face life-or-death situations, the group turns on each other to find who is to blame."
Two Weeks in August airs Saturday nights on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
