The Boys: Mexico Spin-Off Still in Development, Showrunner Confirms
The Boys: Mexico Spin-Off Still in Development

The hit Prime Video superhero drama The Boys has finally concluded with a jaw-dropping fifth season, leaving fans curious about the future of the franchise. Among the several spin-offs in development, The Boys: Mexico was announced back in November 2023, but updates have been sparse.

Current Status of The Boys: Mexico

Despite being revealed nearly three years ago, the spin-off remains in early development. The project is being led by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, writer of DC's Blue Beetle, and executive produced by Mexican stars Diego Luna (Andor) and Gael García Bernal (Station Eleven). Both actors have been rumored to potentially star in minor roles, though this remains unconfirmed. The series is expected to be shot in Mexico with an all or majority Mexican cast.

Recent Updates from Showrunner Eric Kripke

Just before the premiere of The Boys season five, showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that Amazon had received the first draft of the pilot script. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kripke said: "They just delivered a draft of the pilot to Amazon. Amazon seemed to really like it and seemed to be making all the right noises. They gave some notes, so we're gonna incorporate those notes. Gareth [Dunnet-Alcocer], who is the writer, is so smart and good. He'll do, I'm sure, another draft. But it feels like...who the hell knows? You can never predict this stuff, but we're hopeful."

Plot and Future Prospects

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but The Boys: Mexico is believed to be set after the events of the main series finale. Progress on the spin-off may depend on ratings for The Boys season five and the upcoming prequel Vought Rising. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the final season averaged an impressive 57 million viewers per episode, boding well for the franchise's future.

The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
