The head of MI5, Ken McCallum, has warned that Britain faces growing threats from Russia, Iran, online extremism and the misuse of artificial intelligence. The chilling warning should shake every one of us, says the Mirror.
A dangerous new age
The world has entered a dangerous new age in which the front line can run through our streets, schools and homes. Russia is recruiting criminals to sow chaos. Iran is accused of plotting violence on British soil. Extremists are grooming children online, while artificial intelligence threatens to put ever more deadly weapons within reach of terrorists.
An attack could begin with a blackout, a poisoned online lie or a threat against a neighbour because of their faith. The enemies of democracy want fear to do their work for them, turning communities against one another.
Essential protections
That is why MI5's new efforts to protect vital services, confront online manipulation and track the dangers of AI are essential. So too are properly funded police, intelligence services and public institutions.
Britain must remain vigilant, united and determined. Our greatest defence is the society these enemies are desperate to tear apart.
Government must act to save lives
Andy Burnham is right to praise the extraordinary courage of families who have turned unimaginable grief into a fight to save other children's lives. But warm words and understanding alone will not prevent the next drowning tragedy.
What Vanessa Abbess, Simon Haycock and 16 other bereaved families deserve now is firm commitment and urgent action. The Mirror's Save Lives for Sam campaign has set out clear, practical measures, including compulsory water safety lessons, lifesaving equipment and a dedicated minister.
These are sensible steps that could prevent countless families from enduring the same unbearable heartbreak. Too many young lives have already been lost to avoidable tragedies. The Government must now show the determination these grieving parents have demonstrated. Every delay risks another precious life being lost.
