Arsenal's transfer dealings have recently been scrutinised as the club approaches a pivotal moment in their season. With the summer transfer window imminent, Mikel Arteta's squad remains focused on securing the Premier League and Champions League titles.
Title Race and Champions League Final
Arsenal currently control their own destiny. A victory against Burnley at home on Monday, followed by a win at Crystal Palace on the final day, would secure their first league title since 2004. Subsequently, a Champions League final against reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain awaits in Budapest, offering the club a chance to claim their first-ever European Cup.
As the team prepares for these critical weeks, two notable stories have emerged: Jamie Vardy's failed move to the club and Bruno Fernandes' recent comments regarding Declan Rice.
Bruno Fernandes on Declan Rice
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has expressed his disappointment that Declan Rice chose Arsenal over his club. Rice, who has been arguably Arsenal's standout player this season, was linked to Manchester United in 2021 while at West Ham. Despite conversations with United players, a deal fell through, and he eventually joined Arsenal in 2023 for a club-record £105 million.
Fernandes, who viewed Rice as the perfect midfield partner, told Joel Beya: "I've always said, Rice was a player to play for Man United, I was really sad when he chose to go to Arsenal. I always thought he would be a perfect fit for our club."
Jamie Vardy's Snub Explained
Jamie Vardy has opened up about rejecting Arsenal in the summer of 2016. After Leicester City's surprise title win in 2015/16, then-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger pursued Vardy, ready to trigger his £22 million release clause. However, the striker turned down the move, signing a new contract with Leicester instead.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker, Vardy explained his decision. He said: "It was like a surreal situation. I’ve never been involved in that type of thing. Like on paper, they were a way bigger club. I was away that summer with England. And when you’re away with it, you have so much time on your hands. It is frightening. That just gave me the space to just think about everything. And I just said, no, it’s not happening. It ain’t."
Vardy, now 39 and playing for Cremonese, insists he has no regrets, having become one of the Premier League's top strikers and winning an FA Cup with Leicester in 2021.
