Arne Slot's sudden dismissal as Liverpool manager after just two seasons in charge has reportedly been preceded by three formal complaints from senior players. The Dutch coach, who led the club to the Premier League title in 2025, was relieved of his duties following a disappointing fifth-place finish in the 2025-26 campaign.
Player Concerns Emerge
According to The Athletic, doubts over Slot's judgement began when he deployed Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back after Conor Bradley suffered a season-ending injury. Szoboszlai had been in excellent form and was considered one of Liverpool's most important players, but repositioning him limited his effectiveness. Additionally, there was a perception that summer recruits—including Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Jeremie Frimpong, signed for nearly £450 million—were afforded greater leeway than existing squad members. These new additions were reportedly not held to the same expectations and could deliver below-par performances while retaining their place in the starting XI.
Tactical Confusion and Fan Backlash
Worries within the dressing room extended beyond results to tactical matters. During a defeat to Aston Villa, players were left baffled over their set-piece defensive responsibilities, a weakness the hosts exploited. An inquiry reportedly took place in the dressing room, with tensions surfacing. Just one week earlier, Slot had been booed off the pitch by the Anfield faithful after a home draw against Chelsea, who finished 10th. It became evident that the supporters had turned on Slot, and once the atmosphere soured, regaining control proved impossible.
Ultimately, the end was inevitable for the former Feyenoord boss, who was informed of his departure one week after the final fixture of the Premier League season. Liverpool finished on 60 points, 24 fewer than their title-winning tally, and scraped into a Champions League qualification spot.
