Arena soccer player Stefan Mijatovic gets lifetime ban for violent conduct
Arena soccer star banned for life after brawl

San Diego Sockers defender Stefan Mijatovic has been handed a lifetime ban from the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) following his involvement in a violent altercation after the first game of the league's championship series. The incident occurred on Wednesday night in Milwaukee, where the Sockers secured a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Wave in Game 1 of the Ron Newman Cup.

What happened during the brawl?

The confrontation erupted at the final whistle, with players from both sides clashing—a scene not uncommon in indoor soccer, which often resembles hockey more than the outdoor game. The melee spilled into the walkway leading to the locker rooms. Video footage shows Mijatovic taunting fans, who responded by throwing debris at him and his teammates. In turn, Mijatovic hurled a water bottle at the fans, while other Sockers players engaged in a shoving match with spectators. The entire squad eventually retreated down the tunnel.

Mijatovic's disciplinary history

Mijatovic, 29, is a journeyman in the MASL, having played for nine different teams over eight years. His career has been marred by disciplinary issues. In January 2025, while with the Tacoma Stars, he was at the center of a brawl after a match against the Wave, where players exchanged blows near fans. He was already on probation when, 11 months later, he stomped on an injured player following a foul. The league then placed him on a zero-tolerance policy, which he violated on Wednesday night at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

League sanctions and fan bans

In addition to Mijatovic's lifetime ban, five other players received fines or suspensions. The Wave and Sockers organizations were fined for failing to maintain proper conduct. The MASL stated it is working with local law enforcement to identify fans involved, who will face indefinite bans from league events and possible legal consequences.

Mijatovic's career and reputation

Mijatovic has become a cult figure in indoor soccer, known as one of the MASL's most intimidating players. He has also featured in the Kings League, a seven-a-side tournament started by Gerard Piqué, and in TST, an annual seven-a-side competition in the US. He was briefly banned from TST three years ago after a violent confrontation with influencer Noah Beck. Mijatovic also represented the US in the World Cup of minifootball and played outdoor soccer for Chicago House AC in 2021. His indoor soccer journey began with the Chicago Mustangs in 2016, and he has since played for the Orlando SeaWolves, Florida Tropics, St Louis Ambush, Utica City FC, Empire Strykers, Tacoma Stars, Kansas City Comets, and most recently the Sockers.

Barring a reversal of the lifetime ban, Mijatovic's MASL career has ended abruptly. The Sockers and Wave meet again on Friday night for Game 2 of the best-of-three series.
