A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS reveals that 75% of Americans believe Donald Trump is not paying enough attention to the country's most important problems, while two-thirds think he prioritizes himself over the nation's needs. The survey comes less than 100 days before the midterm elections, in which Republicans are widely expected to lose control of one or both chambers of Congress.
Approval rating hits low
Trump's overall approval rating has slumped to 34%, matching his previous low immediately after the January 6, 2021, insurrection. Only 28% approve of his handling of the war in Iran, and 25% say the conflict has been worth the cost in terms of money and American lives. The war's domestic effects are causing disquiet: 74% say rising gas prices have caused at least some hardship, up from 63% in March.
Economic and immigration concerns
In a parallel poll a year ago, 58% said Trump had not gone far enough to reduce the price of everyday goods; that figure has climbed to 71% this week. Even his hardline immigration policies are dragging him down: only 39% approve of his performance, and 54% say he has gone too far in mass deporting undocumented immigrants.
Personal style and effectiveness
Americans are overwhelmingly displeased with Trump's personal stamp on the presidency. His pursuit of a taxpayer-funded White House ballroom, botched renovation of the Washington DC reflecting pool, and plans for a self-aggrandizing ceremonial arch have left only 17% feeling positive. Asked if Trump understands problems Americans face in everyday life, 73% said no. Only 38% consider him an effective world leader, and 57% say the 80-year-old president lacks the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively.
