Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan has admitted he will avoid watching Monday’s Hearts vs Rangers match as he concentrates on the Hoops’ title charge. With the Premiership race reaching its climax, McCowan is determined to secure victory over Hibernian on Sunday to pile pressure on the two rivals before their Tynecastle showdown.
“You really just need to focus on your own games,” McCowan said. “Regardless when you play, you need to win. Whether you play ahead of Hearts and Rangers or after, the pressure is on us to win.” The 28-year-old emphasised the expectation at Celtic to win every match, insisting the team must deliver a performance that gives them the best chance of success.
McCowan described Hibs as a “really good side” who always push opponents to their limits. He acknowledged that Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off will be tough, with Hibs still chasing fourth place. “The games we have played with them this season have been close and they will be right up for it because they’ve still got their own targets to shoot for,” he added.
The former Dundee star is no stranger to title drama. He recalled the 2022-23 Championship final day, where Dundee beat Queen’s Park 5-3 to win the league, with McCowan scoring the fifth goal. “It went down to the final day. We won 5-3 and I got the fifth. It was a crazy first half,” he said.
McCowan, who signed a new Celtic contract last month, admitted he would welcome a similar last-day triumph, but not the heart-stopping tension. “If it works out that way I’ll be happy. Obviously, it’s not just as simple as saying it,” he said, reflecting on his move from Dundee last summer.
