Fox League commentator Warren Smith has publicly disclosed the medical reason behind his noticeable absence from the commentary booth during the opening round of the NRL season. The veteran broadcaster has been diagnosed with pre-cancerous lesions on his vocal cords, a condition formally known as laryngeal carcinoma.
A Career Voice Silenced Temporarily
Smith, a leading voice within the Fox Sports commentary team for nearly three decades, was conspicuously missing when the NRL season launched its historic opening games in Las Vegas. His absence immediately sparked concern and speculation among dedicated rugby league fans accustomed to his distinctive calls.
The Diagnosis and Initial Symptoms
The commentator first realised something was amiss towards the end of the previous season. "I was just sort of battling through the end of the season last year – the last two or three months," Smith explained in an interview with News Corp. "We all end at some stage as far as our careers are concerned," he stated, "but I want to go out on my terms." He is hopeful for a swift and complete recovery, with the goal of returning to the commentary box he has graced for so long.
