The nickname is a clear nod to Trump's own repeated references to Joe Biden as 'Sleepy Joe' during the 2020 campaign. Trump, now 79, has previously boasted of sleeping only three to four hours a night, well below the recommended seven to nine hours for his age. His personal physician stated in 2018 that he sleeps four to five hours nightly.
Despite the apparent drowsiness, Trump perked up when Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed him that Israel and Hamas were close to a Gaza peace deal. The president later announced the agreement, prompting calls for him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Allies like JD Vance and Kid Rock have noted Trump's habit of calling them at odd hours, while Attorney General Pam Bondi remarked, 'None of us can keep up with him.'
Newsom, nearing the end of his second term and expected to run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, has emerged as a prominent critic of Trump. His satirical merchandise includes T-shirts and caps mocking the president. He told Stephen Colbert that his approach aims to 'put a mirror up to Trump and the absurdity of what's going on in this country.'
