Tragic Ski Death: Teenager Dies After Falling From Austrian Beginner Slope
A 14-year-old boy from the Czech Republic has tragically died following a skiing accident at an Austrian resort, marking the second fatal incident at the country's ski facilities within just two days. The teenager was on a beginner's slope at the popular Feuerkogel mountain resort in Upper Austria when the accident occurred on Monday morning.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to police reports, the boy suddenly veered off the designated piste area while skiing on what was described as a relatively flat section of the beginner's slope. Local media indicate he fell approximately seven metres through scree and trees before his helmet shattered upon impact with rocks.
Bernhard Magritzer, head of the Gmunden Alpine Police, provided chilling details to the Kronen Zeitung newspaper, explaining: "The problem is that there is currently no snow next to the slopes to cushion such a serious accident."
Rescue Efforts and Discovery
The teenager was discovered by a cable car employee who happened to be passing the area at the time of the incident. The employee immediately alerted authorities, who dispatched emergency responders to the scene.
First responders attempted to resuscitate the child at the edge of the slope for approximately one hour before he was officially declared dead. Mr Magritzer confirmed that "all available resources were called to the mountain" in the desperate rescue attempt.
Safety Warnings Issued
Following the tragedy, Austrian authorities have issued stark warnings to skiers about current conditions on the slopes. Mr Magritzer emphasised that skiers should exercise "extreme caution" while slopes remain hard with minimal snow along boundaries.
"The slopes are extremely hard and allow for high speeds, which many then underestimate," he added, highlighting the particular dangers presented by current weather and snow conditions.
Context and Recent Incidents
This tragic event represents the second fatal skiing incident in Austria within just 48 hours. Two days prior, a 49-year-old Austrian man died following a collision with a 14-year-old Irish teenager on the Schmittenhöhe mountain in Zell am See, approximately 68 kilometres from Salzburg.
In that separate incident, Austrian police interviewed the teenage boy after he allegedly left the scene of the fatal collision.

A 2020 study examining Austrian ski fatalities between the 2008/09 and 2017/18 winter seasons recorded 369 deaths during that period. While researchers noted that yearly fatality numbers were decreasing over time, they still concluded that additional prevention measures were necessary to further reduce risks.
The study found Austria recorded less than one injury per 1,000 ski days, with between 0.53 and 1.88 deaths per million ski days. Despite these statistics, authorities continue to emphasise the importance of safety precautions.
