Ryan Giggs has faced backlash after appearing in a promotional video for Asian betting brand F168 to mark International Women's Day. The former Manchester United and Wales footballer, 52, recorded a message celebrating women's 'strength, beauty and achievements' while urging viewers to 'have some fun and games' on the gambling site.
In the clip, Giggs says: 'Hello everyone, I'm Ryan Giggs, brand ambassador of F168. Happy Women's Day. Today, we celebrate the strength, beauty and achievements of women everywhere. To all the amazing women in our community, keep shining and inspiring us all. Don't forget to have some fun and games at F168.' He later shared the video on social media with a caption wishing women 'confidence, beauty, and positive energy'.
The move comes as Giggs attempts to rebuild his career after stepping down as Wales manager in 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of assault. He was later cleared of charges including controlling and coercive behaviour against his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, but the trial damaged his reputation. He has since been touring social clubs for £149-a-head meet-and-greet events and left his role as director of football at Salford City in September.
Critics have pointed out the irony of Giggs promoting a betting site on a day dedicated to women's rights, given his history. Welsh Women's Aid previously criticised the Crown Prosecution Service for dropping charges against him. Giggs has largely stayed out of the limelight since the trial, but this latest venture marks a return to public view.
