Burnley have condemned the racist abuse directed at midfielder Hannibal Mejbri on Instagram following his side's 1-1 draw with Chelsea. The abuse came after Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana was sent off for two yellow cards, the first of which was for a foul on Hannibal.
Hannibal posted screenshots of the abusive direct messages he received, writing: 'It's 2026 and there still ppl like that … Educate yourself and your kids pls.' Fofana also shared the abuse he received on social media.
Burnley issued a statement saying they are 'disgusted' by the abuse and have a 'zero-tolerance approach to any form of discrimination'. The club has reported the post to Meta, Instagram's parent company, and expects support from the Premier League and police to identify the perpetrator.
Chelsea also condemned the abuse directed at Fofana, calling it 'abhorrent' and stating they will work with authorities to take the strongest possible action. The Premier League added its condemnation, warning that those found guilty face club bans and legal prosecution.
