President Donald Trump has lashed out at his Republican colleagues in the Senate after they left Washington for the Memorial Day weekend without funding his signature immigration agenda, following widespread opposition to a $1.8 billion "slush fund."
Trump's Fury on Truth Social
In a furious post on Truth Social on Friday, the president targeted Senator Thom Tillis, a soon-to-retire Republican who has broken with Trump on several issues, including the newly created "Anti-Weaponization Fund."
Calling Tillis a "weak and ineffective Senator," Trump accused him of opposing the fund in retaliation for the president's refusal to endorse him. "The media said how brave he was to take me on, but he wasn't brave, he was just the opposite - HE WAS A QUITTER!" Trump wrote. "Now he can have all the fun he wants for a few months, with some of his RINO friends, screwing the Republican Party. In the end it will only get bigger, and better, and stronger, than ever before!!!"
The $1.8 Billion Fund Controversy
The impasse centers on a Justice Department fund that would allow individuals who believe they were unfairly prosecuted to seek monetary compensation from taxpayers. Critics have expressed concern that this could benefit allies of Trump, including January 6 rioters whom he pardoned, despite their violent attack on the Capitol.
Senator Thom Tillis had previously called the fund "beyond the pale" and encouraged colleagues to speak out against it. Trump, however, insisted he "gave up a lot of money" to create the fund, which he claimed would help others.
Lawmakers headed home early for the holiday weekend after failing to reach an agreement, leaving the president's immigration agenda in limbo.
