Months of torrential rain followed by a hosepipe ban have sparked outrage, with columnist Virginia Blackburn calling for water company bosses to face jail sentences. She argues that water companies run their businesses so poorly that they cannot harvest the rain of Britain at its wettest to provide water when the sun returns. Leaky pipes and raw sewage in waterways are a disgrace, and these people give capitalism a bad name.
Boy George supports Israel
Blackburn praised Boy George for releasing a single supporting Israel, noting the difficulty of doing so in the current climate, especially in showbiz circles where the prevailing mood is the opposite. She called the rising tide of antisemitism the most shocking thing she has observed in her lifetime. She also mentioned being “unfriended” on Facebook by a former colleague because of her views on Israel, questioning what he made of a recent attack on a Pride march in Berlin.
Teen benefits controversy
Blackburn criticised teenagers claiming sickness benefits for anxiety receiving £100 a week more than teenagers in a part-time job on the minimum wage. She described this as insanity, adding that Britain is drowning in debt while spending money on teenagers trolling each other on social media. She suggested teaching them about the work ethic and noted that these teenagers may be called to fight for their country.
Andy Burnham on education
Andy Burnham has emphasised that a university education is not necessarily key to success, highlighting the importance of apprenticeships and other vocational roles. Blackburn agreed, saying that under Tony Blair the university system was utterly debased, offering meaningless degrees and leaving students in debt. She called it a country-wide scam and said the number of students should be halved.
Girl Guides uniform change
The Girl Guides have introduced a new look where members need only wear a top from the new range to be considered in uniform and can choose the rest of their clothing. This is billed as “freedom to express themselves”, but Blackburn argued it is a mistake. She said uniforms prevent showing off wealth and foster a sense of belonging, which youngsters crave.
Gen Z and tea
A survey found that nearly half of Gen Zers reach for a cup of tea when nervous rather than a stiff drink. Blackburn questioned whether this is the most boring generation ever.
Prince Harry visit
Prince Harry is set to visit again and stay at Buckingham Palace. Blackburn expressed displeasure, comparing it to having a Prime Minister no one voted for and a prince no one wants.
