Andy Burnham, the Member of Parliament widely expected to succeed Keir Starmer as Prime Minister, has faced ridicule after his vision for the UK's future failed to attract even 1,000 likes on X (formerly Twitter). The clip, posted on July 2, shows Burnham outlining his plans during an LBC interview, but the tepid response has led critics to declare his campaign 'over before it's begun.'
Burnham's Pitch Falls Flat
In the video, Burnham states: 'Life is too hard and unaffordable for too many people. We need to do things differently.' Despite the ambitious tone, the post garnered fewer than 1,000 likes, a figure critics seized upon as indicative of waning public support. One user commented: 'Believing you're riding the crest of a wave of popularity and you get fewer than 1k likes for your vision for the future. And they're from Lucy Powell's sock accounts. Over before it's begun.'
Criticism Outpaces Support
The backlash against Burnham's plan has itself received more engagement than the original post. Another critic wrote: 'Not a single word about what they will do and how. Just a wish list of nice things to have. 'We need cheap stuff' 'We need to be happy' 'We need to take care of everything...'' A third added: 'He's not serious. How can they run a country that's in a serious mess on nothing more than vibes.'
Policy Details and Triple Lock Commitment
During the LBC interview, Burnham outlined proposals for public control over water, energy, and transport, and pledged to address the energy crisis. He also confirmed he would maintain the state pension triple lock, which increases pensions each year by the highest of average earnings growth, inflation, or 2.5%. 'I appreciate there's a lot of debate about this but it is important that the commitment in the manifesto stands,' Burnham said.
Burnham also indicated there is room for movement on tax, despite pledging to keep Labour's 2024 manifesto commitments not to increase workers' income tax, national insurance, or VAT rates. The lukewarm response to his vision, however, suggests a challenging road ahead as he positions himself for the top job.
