The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued an updated warning advising British nationals against all travel to Russia. The advisory, published on May 5 and reaffirmed on May 14, cites ongoing risks and threats stemming from Russia's continuing invasion of Ukraine.
Key Risks Highlighted
The FCDO warns of several specific dangers for those considering travel to Russia:
- Security incidents: Including drone attacks and Russian air defence activity.
- Limited flight availability: Few options remain for returning to the UK.
- Reduced consular support: The UK government's ability to provide assistance is extremely limited.
Additionally, the FCDO notes an increased risk of British nationals being detained by Russian authorities, even for activities conducted outside Russia. The Russian government has a history of using foreign detainees as leverage, and the FCDO's capacity to help in such cases is minimal.
Terrorist Threat
There is also a high likelihood of terrorist attacks, particularly in major cities. Recent incidents include the 2024 attack at Crocus City Concert Hall in Krasnogorsk, near Moscow, which killed 145 people.
Limited UK Government Support
While the British Embassy in Moscow and Consulate in Ekaterinburg remain open, the FCDO cautions that the situation could change quickly. In-person support is very limited, especially in the North Caucasus region.
British nationals in Russia requiring assistance can call the FCDO's 24-hour helpline at +7 495 956 7200 and select consular services, or contact Russian emergency services on 112.
Travel Insurance Implications
Travel insurance policies may be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice. For further details, visit the FCDO website.
