Performing Arts Teacher Faces Multiple Sexual Offence Charges in Court
A performing arts teacher has made a court appearance to deny what prosecutors described as 'a huge amount' of sexual offences against female pupils. Philip Hawkins, aged 47, pleaded not guilty to eleven separate charges involving alleged misconduct with students under his supervision.
Details of the Allegations
The charges include seven counts of sexual activity with girls aged between 13 and 17 by allegedly abusing his adult position of trust. These incidents are said to have occurred between February 2008 and July 2010 in Lowestoft, Suffolk. The specific allegations involve intentionally causing girls to engage in sexual activity, sexually touching several victims, and causing a child to view an image of a person engaging in sexual activity.
Prosecutor Sarah Daws told the court: 'During the course of his position looking after and teaching people under 18, there have been allegations involving these sexual matters and a significant amount of complainants spanning over a long period of time. He was a teacher and therefore in a position of trust. There are a huge amount of allegations here.'
Court Proceedings and Defense Response
Hawkins appeared at Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court wearing smart grey trousers and a shirt, presenting a bespectacled appearance as he denied all charges. The magistrates determined that the severity of the allegations meant they were unable to handle the case, resulting in it being sent to crown court for further proceedings.
Defense representative Lucy Brakewell acknowledged the complexity of the case during last week's hearing, stating: 'There are clearly going to be abuse of trust arguments. There are clearly going to be abuse of process arguments. It is indeed complex.'
Additional Charges and Case Management
The defendant faces additional historic charges including intentionally causing or inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity between February 28, 2008 and July 31, 2010. He is also accused of the same charge involving another child on two unspecified occasions between September 1, 2009 and January 25, 2010.
Hawkins, who now resides in Essex, was granted unconditional bail and instructed to attend Ipswich Crown Court for a case management hearing scheduled for April 8. The case continues to develop as legal teams prepare for the crown court proceedings.
